The transmitted bacteria are called Borrelia and, like the pathogens of syphilis, belong to the spirochete family of bacteria and are shaped like an irregular spiral, large and mobile. Lyme disease is an infectious disease caused by bacteria that is transmitted primarily through the bite of infected ticks. The bacteria, called Borrelia burgdorferi, can enter the body when an infected tick bites a person. The most common causes of Lyme disease are therefore the bite of ticks, especially ticks of the genus Ixodes, which carry the bacteria. Once the bacteria enter the body, they can spread to various organs and tissues, causing a variety of symptoms.
